Hardwood flooring is versatile. It comes in several colors, textures and finishes. There’s something for every interior vibe you’re going for.

Here are some of the different types of wood finishes available on the market:

Surface finishing and penetrating finish

surface finishing and penetrating finish

Surface finishing refers to the coating applied to wood that gives it a natural look. It’s easier to apply and is done so to add a protective layer. Penetrating finish, on the other hand, is applied inside furniture. It doesn’t give a natural look, however, it’s very durable. Lindseed, Tung oil, and Danish are some types of penetrating finishes that are used on wood.

Dye

While wood tends to differ a bit in tone, they don’t naturally occur in a wide variety of colors. Dyes are therefore used to change the color of the wood or can be used to give an even color to all the wood panels. Water-based and oil-based finishes are both available to dye the wood.

Oil finish

An oil finish improves the texture and appearance of unfinished wood. With time, the natural oils present in the wood dry out and makes it brittle. Oil finishes replenish the oil in the wood grain which nourishes and protects it for internal and external use.

Varnish

Varnish is made up of organic resins, oil, and solvents. This is usually a clear and transparent coat applied to wood to protect it against the rays of the sun. The sun’s UV rays are known to fade the wood and dry it down. Varnish, unlike other finishes, takes time to dry. When applied on the top of wood dye, it gives the best protection.

Shellac

Shellac is a wax-based wood finish that comes from a bug called lac, which is found in abundance in most forests. The wax left behind by this bug is collected from the tree, an alcohol-based solvent is added for better results. Shellac is available in a wide range of colors while being easy to apply. It does, however, give wood that ultra-glossy finish.
